Interest free period points to a credit card Christmas

With the Christmas shopping season officially underway and people already panicking over the shortage of shopping days left, the credit card has been lauded as the best way to use credit this Christmas.

Comparison service moneysupermarket.com has said that a credit card is a much more sensible way to use credit than a store card, which offers less competitive interest rates than a credit card.

"For those that pay off their balance in full, I would advise looking at the cashback deals on offer to get a financial reward from their expenditure," said Richard Mason, director of credit cards at moneysupermarket.com.

"If you do have debt outstanding that cannot be cleared, then look at transferring it to one of over 30 zero per cent introductory deals available today."

The price comparison website says that people using a store card over a credit card are spending a combined total of £100 million a year more than necessary on interest and other charges.

The website also says that credit card and plastic spending in the run up to Christmas is likely to exceed last year's total of £22 billion.
